Get a different job at a different company

There are right and wrong ways to leave a job. If you leave the right way then you should be able to use your supervisor as a reference. Here are some tips on leaving your job the right way:

Keep your plans private: No one needs to know that you are looking for a job. If your co-workers or supervisor know you want to leave the company, this could create problems.

Update your CV: Add any new jobs you've had since you last wrote a CV. Also, add your current responsibilities, new skills, etc.

Find a job: Start looking for jobs. Click here for tips on finding a new job.

Keep doing your job well: The best way to get a new job is to get a good reference from your current supervisor. To do that, you need to keep up a good work record.

Don't leave until you have a new job: It's much easier to get a job when you have one. Try to hang in there until you get a new job.

Use your leave time for interviews: No one should know where you are going, but you should give notice that you need to take personal or vacation time.

Get a firm offer from the new company: Make sure you have a letter confirming your new job before you quit your old one.

Give plenty of notice before you resign: Typically, you should give 2 weeks notice to your present employer but some companies ask for more. Check your personnel policies and follow them.

Leave on a good note: You'll probably want to use your supervisor as a reference in the future so, make sure there are no hard feelings when you leave.
