Secondary Schools are either owned by the local government, the state government, the federal government, organizations or individuals.
Federal-government Schools: In each of the thirty-six States and the Federal Capital Territory in Nigeria, there is at least one Federal Government College. Through the Ministry of Education, these schools are funded and managed directly by the Federal Government. Thus, tuition and fees are quite affordable.
State-owned Schools: There are also state-owned schools funded by state governments of the thirty-six states and the Federal Government territory. These schools are supposed to be free but students still pay for certain things like textbooks and uniforms.
Privately-owned Schools: Of all the secondary schools in Nigeria, those owned by private individuals and organizations are the most expensive.
Secondary School is divided into two levels: Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS). Students spend three years at each of level.
