What is stress?

Stress is the "wear and tear" our bodies experience as we get used to changing environments. There's "good" stress and "bad" stress. "Good" stress is getting a well-deserved promotion at work; "bad" stress is when you get in an argument with someone.
 

Family, money, work and school are the most common causes of stress. Too much stress can lead to health problems and affect relationships with friends and family. When people constantly react to stressful situations, they could develop anger management problems.
 

What are some of the symptoms?

Visit your doctor for regular check-ups. The symptoms below could be caused by other things. Illness and disease can contribute to your stress levels.

  • Headaches and backaches
  • Not being able to sleep
  • Feeling angry or frustrated
  • Problems staying focused
  • Crying
  • Avoiding Others
  • Upset stomachs and ulcers
  • Rashes
  • High blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke
     

How do you prevent and treat it?

  • Get regular exercise. 20-30 minutes of physical activity (walking, jogging, or sit-ups) can clear your head and give you time to think. Some people get tense and their muscles get sore. If you work in a stressful environment, try taking a walk around the block during your lunch hour or tea break.
  • Meditate. Put on relaxing music and close your eyes for 10-20 minutes. Take deep breaths and clear your mind.
  • Keep a journal or talk to someone. Writing your feelings down or talking to someone can help you put your finger on what's making you stressed.
  • Eating healthy meals makes a difference in how you feel.
  • Learn to say no. Don't take on more than you can handle.
